After failing to reach the postseason for the first time since 2010, the Chattahoochee Cougars’ final season under coach Mike Owens resulted in a 4-6 record in 2013. Last season, new head coach Vince Strine inherited what was a young, inexperienced team. His first campaign in 2014 ended in a 3-7 season, but with many starters returning hungry for a state title-shot, Strine is hopeful that this team can be a threat in region 6-AAAAAA this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars look to be a ball-hawking swarm of defenders that create chaos for opposing offenses. “ We’ve got a lot of speed defensively,” Coach Strine explained. “It’s a relatively no-name defense, but they will be fast and ready to go.” The defense will have to deal with the graduation of their leader last season, MLB Josh Weisberg, who is going to play ball on Saturdays next season for Brown University. This season, their unquestioned leader, and perhaps the most talented player on the roster, is senior DE Bryce Folsom. With offers from Syracuse, Georgia State, and N.C State among others, Folsom is a guy that quarterbacks must be aware of pre-snap. At 6”4 250, Folsom displays superior strength and it’s very difficult to block him with just one person. Alongside Folsom will be senior outside linebacker Brandon Ware, who is a lockdown edge defender and a sure-tackler who will only add to this speedy defense Strine hopes to have ready.
The Cougars offense this season looks to be dangerous. QB Chase Owens, who started every game last season as a sophomore, is going to have the offense simplified a little bit to make him feel more comfortable. That process will certainly be made easier with the return of all his favorite weapons, including leading WR last season Isaac Kinsey. Also a junior this year, Kinsey has a chance to be All-State and will look to have another outstanding season. Back in the mix is second-leading receiver Andrew Thomas, who is coming off a stellar freshman season and will be a threat for this team for the next few years. Rounding off this four-headed monster will be senior running back Blake Hundley, who according to coach Strine, could be the top running back in the region this season. With many starters returning on both sides of the ball, experience will prove to be the key as the Cougars try to make the postseason once again.
