He may have moved his game elsewhere, but that shouldn’t limit the love Braves fans have for Andruw Jones. With that said, we should all rejoice in the 32-year-old’s 2009 career revival. In 85 at-bats, the 10-time Gold Glover and five-time All-Star is hitting a respectable .282 with five homers, 14 RBIs and nine doubles.
After being released by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Jones signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers in February and has since posted a .415 on-base percentage along with a .565 slugging percentage. For more information, click here.
Falcons offensive lineman Tyson Clabo, who was a restricted free agent this offseason, has signed back with the club. Clabo, who played his college ball at Wake Forest, has been a valuable starter for the Falcons over the past four seasons, starting 37 games and all 16 last season. In other roster news, the Falcons released undrafted free agent linebacker Brock Christopher out of Missouri.
Despite a 5-0 deficit heading into the eighth inning of Tuesday evening’s game against the Cubs, the Braves rallied late to earn a 6-5 victory in 12 innings. And, in an attempt to keep momentum on its side, Atlanta will turn to ace Derek Lowe tonight in Game 2 of the series. Lowe is currently 6-3 with a 3.49 ERA and will face Chicago’s Ted Lilly, who is 6-4 with a 3.5 ERA.
Lowe faced the Cubs last season in a National League Division Series game and held the squad to two runs on seven hits in six innings to win Game 1.
Tonight’s game, to be played at Turner Field, is scheduled to begin a 7:10 p.m.
A former Falcon’s son will have a much greater chance to make a name for himself at the college level after a high-profile transfer. Dominique Davis, who was in line to start at quarterback for Boston College this season but was recently suspended for academic reasons, announced his transfer from the school this week. This means that Justin Tuggle, a Northview High School product and the son of Falcons linebacking great Jessie Tuggle, is one step closer to earning a starting spot at the quarterback position. He will compete with Codi Beok for the top spot when preseason camp convenes, as neither quarterback separated himself from the other during spring practice. Tuggle redshirted last season.
In Atlanta Dream news, the team waived third-year guard Ivory Latta as WNBA roster cuts continue. Latta, who was an All-American at North Carolina during her time in college, has seen her once promising professional career hit some major road bumps since entering the league. The Dream were her second team in two years of pro experience, and it looks as if she will have to catch on with another team if she wants to continue on in the WNBA.
