The Oglethorpe University men’s golf team captured the school’s eighth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship by outlasting the field at the Tunica Resorts in Mississippi this past
weekend.

The Stormy Petrels battled tough conditions throughout the three day tournament to emerge with a team total of 920 to best  Rhodes College by seven strokes. Four Oglethorpe golfers – Scott Pugh of  Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania, Colin Chapman of Franklin, North Carolina,  Olafur Loftsson of Reykjavik, Iceland and Hap Kaufold of Albany, Georgia  – posted scores inside the top seven at the tournament with Pugh  bringing home medalist honors for the top overall individual.

The  tournament victory, which gave Oglethorpe its most SCAC Championships in  any sport, also provided the Stormy Petrels with an automatic qualifier berth to the 2009 NCAA Division III Golf Championships to be held from May 11 to May 16 at the PGA Golf Course in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. It will mark Oglethorpe’s ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Golf Championships where the Stormy Petrels have recorded a top-10 finish in  each of the last seven years.
