Westlake’s Love named Coach of the Week

Westlake head coach Bryan Love is the Atlanta Falcons High School Coach of the Week. Love has made history in just two seasons with the Lions. The program plummeted to an 0-10 season in 2012 and Love was faced with the challenge of getting an entire program to buy into his system as he entered his first season as a head coach. Westlake went on to reach the playoffs in 2013 and finished 5-6 with plenty of positive momentum heading into this season.

The success last year is nothing compared to the tremendous strides Westlake has made in year two under Love. Westlake is 9-1 and sits one win away from posting the second double-digit wins season in the school’s 26-year history. The Lions crushed North Paulding 41-13 in the opening round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs last Friday and will host Etowah on Friday.

The win column is just part of the success story and it is the growth within the community and program where Love is making his biggest impact. In order to advance and promote player health and safety at the youth and high school level, Coach Love has worked with feeder programs to get an early start with the young athletes. He visits elementary schools to talk with young students and brought a Strength and Conditioning coach to Westlake to help build the players physically and to make sure they are doing everything in a healthy and safe manner. The varsity team also partnered up with feeder schools in the area to help provide tutoring and reading to elementary age students.

Each week of the season, the winner of this award will receive a personalized certificate from the NFL, a commemorative game ball and a $1,000 grant from the NFL’s Youth Football Fund to his school’s athletic department.
