R6 T3 Mays at R3 T1 Ware County
Mays used a fourth quarter goal-line stand to upend South Paulding last week. Charlie Patrick ran for 93 yards in the win and Natrez Patrick added on two more sacks. Ware County came out slow but rolled Starr’s Mill in the second half using 28 unanswered points. The Gators allow only nine points per game while scoring 35. Both defenses are strong with Ware totaling 21.5 sacks and 13 interceptions; Mays has 35 sacks and 20 interceptions. Mays’ best chance to win might be in a low scoring game.
R2 T3 Jones County at R7 T1 Kell
High-flying Jones County was kept in check by Carver, but still managed to pull out a 13-12 victory. Gun-slinger Bradley Hunnicutt was picked off twice in the win. The only score for the Hounds came on a three yard run from Terrell Solomon. Kell took care of Winder-Barrow 31-7 thanks to three Ivan Walls touchdown runs. Both the Greyhounds and Longhorns are extremely balanced. Jones County averages 219 yards passing and 182 yards rushing while Kell averages 190 yards passing and 205 yards rushing.
R6 T2 Stephenson at R4 T1 Stockbridge
There will be no shortage of speed in this matchup. The Jaguars of Stephenson rolled over a solid Alexander team 41-27 after amassing 515 yards rushing. Dewann Ford Jr connected on just two passes, but both went for long scores. Stockbridge held Brunswick to just 151 yards of offense last week and collected a safety while doing so. The Tigers enjoy pounding the ball just like Stephenson. Artemus Mitchell scored twice on the night and is go-to man in the backfield.
R7 T4 Sequoyah at R2 T2 Houston County
The biggest upset of the playoffs thus far saw the streaking Chiefs stun undefeated Lanier. Trey Mitchell ran for 141 yards and Ethan Riggle hit a field goal to send the now 6-5 Chiefs onto the next round. Sequoyah negated Lanier’s strong pass rush with a heavy dose of Mitchell. Houston County blew past LaGrange. The Bears average nearly 500 yards per game and will undoubtedly test the Chiefs’ secondary. Jake Fromm threw for 358 yards last week. Sequoyah will need to keep the Bears offense off the field if they want to advance.
R3 T3 Glynn Academy at R6 T1 Creekside
Coming off a 242-yard rushing performance, Tysean Carter leads defending state champs Creekside into the second round against Glynn Academy. Carter along with Bricen Terry are the Seminoles’ main catalysts on offense. The Terrors escaped a Marquis Terry onslaught to win 35-34 over Drew in overtime. Zach Lamper and Garrison Hurd are Glynn Academy’s two main weapons. Both teams’ defenses allow over 20 points per game.
R7 T2 Dalton at R2 T1 Northside-Warner Robins
Both teams took care of its first round opponents with ease. Willie Jordan (Northside) and Kelvis Rhodes (Dalton) are two running backs that make their offense go. Payton Veraldi will challenge Northside’s strong defense with his arm. Whoever wins the turnover battle might be the favorite. Veraldi is exceptional with the ball, throwing just five interceptions on 179 attempts. Northside is more battle tested coming out of Region-2, dealing with the high powered offenses of Jones and Houston County.
R3 T2 Coffee at R5 T1 Allatoona
Coffee struggled to move the ball in a tight win over Mundy’s Mill 14-6. Lacarvius Sears ran for 118 yards and one touchdown in the win. The Trojans are able to rely upon their strong defense (12 ppg) if their offense struggles. They will need to have their offense clicking on all cylinders as they face undefeated Allatoona who comes in averaging 40 points per game. Superstar running back Russell Halimon gobbled up 225 yards rushing and two scores against Carver-Atlanta. The Bucs average nearly 300 yards per game on the ground.
R8 T2 Gainesville at R1 T1 Harris County
The Tigers escaped an upset-minded Warner Robins team 33-31. Tae Crowder powered Harris County with three rushing touchdowns. It should be another high scoring game as they welcome the Gainesville Red Elephants into town. Michael Byrd ran for 217 yards while Mikey Gonzalez threw for 130. Gainesville can score with the best of them, averaging 36 points using a balanced mix of run and pass.
