For only the third time in NCAA Tournament history, the Georgia Lady Bulldogs dropped a round of 64 contest in “March Madness.” Georgia fell to Arizona State, 58-47, at The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Saturday. ”Obviously, we’re very disappointed in a number of things as it relates to Georgia,” head coach Andy Landers said. ”We found Arizona State today to be the team we prepared for on tape for the most part. They hang their hat on their defensive abilities, and they were very good there today.”
Georgia’s 47 points equaled the Lady Dogs’ lowest offensive output ever in NCAA Tournament play, matching the tally scored in an “Elite Eight” loss to Stanford in 1997.
Porsha Phillips, Angela Puleo and Angel Robinson all scored nine points to lead Georgia (18-14) offensively. The outing represented the first time in Georgia’s NCAA history that no player scored in double figures.
The Sun Devils used a 7-0 run midway through the first half to build a 16-8 advantage and maintained a comfortable margin most of the rest of the way.
Georgia trailed 25-12 with 2:30 left in the opening half but finished the period on a 8-2 run to close within 27-20 at intermission.
The Lady Bulldogs rallied again early in the second stanza, pulling to 29-24 at the 17:00 mark on a three from Puleo, but Arizona State regained a a double-digit lead with a trio of baskets in a span of just 94 seconds.
Georgia surged to within 48-41 with 4:47 left, but the Sun Devils answered with an 8-2 run to end any doubt.
Georgia made its 26th NCAA Tournament appearance and moved into sole possession of the No. 2 position among national leaders in “March Madness” invitations. The Lady Bulldogs other round of 64 exits came to George Washington in 1998 and Old Dominion in 2002.
