Georgia basketball players Troy Brewer and Zac Swansey have requested, and been granted, releases from their athletic scholarships, indicating their intentions to transfer from the University, the two players announced Thursday.
Brewer, a 6-5 guard from Rockville, Md., played in 53 of a possible 66 games over the past two years as a Bulldog. In the 2009 season he averaged 2.1 points, 0.9 rebounds in 7.1 minutes per contest, with a career best of 15 points against Kennesaw State on Dec. 31.
“I enjoyed my two years at the University, but after discussing the situation with my family, I wanted to seek a better opportunity for more playing time, and to be closer to home,” Brewer said. “I loved playing with my teammates here and I wish them the very best in the future.”
Swansey, also a sophomore guard, started in 17 of Georgia’s 32 games this season, averaging 4.3 points and 2.9 assists. Twice during his two seasons he won games with last-second 3-point shots, including a second-round SEC Tournament game against Kentucky in 2008.
“I just decided the best thing for me was a fresh start at another school,” Swansey said. “I talked about it a lot with my family. We decided that it was best that I transfer somewhere, sit out a year, and start fresh in a new situation. I want to thank the Georgia coaches that brought me here and the players I played with here. I wish them the best.”
