Favors wins Naismith Trophy as nation’s top boys hoopster

Derrick Favors, who is hoping to lead his South Atlanta Hornets to a Class 3A state championship, has been named the 2009 Naismith Trophy winner, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday. The award is given to both the top boys and girls players in the nation.

Favors is now the third Georgia male athlete to win the Naismith Trophy in six years. The Georgia Tech commit joins Dwight Howard (Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, 2004) and Louis Williams (South Gwinnett, 2005). Collins Hill’s Maya Moore was named the female recipient in both 2006 and 2007.

Favors and the Hornets will face Columbia, the defending Class 4A state champions who moved down to 3A this year, in the semifinals Friday in Macon at 8:30 p.m. The Class 3A state championship will be played Saturday at 8:45 p.m. and will be broadcast both on GPB TV and www.gpb.org/basketball.
