The St. Pius X girls bounced back from a 4-1 loss to current Class AA No. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian four days earlier to beat Blessed Trinity 3-0 last Tuesday. It was a battle between the top two teams in Class AAA, but the visiting Titans were no match for St. Pius X. The Golden Lions, who captured the Class AAA state championship in 2013 for their fourth title in the past five years, have won 11 of their last 12 matches. They have a week off before paying a visit to Class AAAAA No. 1 McIntosh next Monday.
A similarly huge Class AA showdown took place last Wednesday and also featured region rivals. Westminster hosted then-No. 1 Lovett and the Wildcats pulled off a 2-1 victory in a shootout. Anna Lee put Westminster ahead 1-0 before the Lions answered to force overtime, which saw both teams go scoreless en route to the decisive kicks. The Wildcats missed a shot that would have won it but then converted a must-make situation to extend the shootout to a seventh round. Westminster goalie Caroline Heller made a diving stop and Miller Leeson kicked the game-winner. Lovett and Westminster will face each other again on Friday, this time with the Lions enjoying home-field advantage.
Lovett’s setback allowed fellow Region 6 representative Greater Atlanta Christian to assume the top spot in the Class AA rankings. The Spartans won their seventh game in a row since falling at Lovett 1-0 on March 4 when they hammered region foe Wesleyan 6-2 last Tuesday. Greater Atlanta Christian will get another shot at the Lions next Thursday before wrapping up their regular season against Westminster.
It was a difficult week for both Wesleyan and Woodward. In addition to their defeat at Greater Atlanta Christian, the Wolves also fell at Buford last Friday. Woodward also endured a brutal schedule and suffered losses at Marist (8-0 last Tuesday) and to McIntosh (3-0 last Thursday).
In Class AAAAAA, fourth-ranked Peachtree Ridge enjoyed a successful week with a 1-0 win at Duluth last Tuesday and a 3-1 victory over North Gwinnett last Thursday. Against North Gwinnett, Allie Hoxie gave the Lions a 1-0 lead before Amanda Ferry broke a tie with two second-half goals.
Boys
In Class AA action, No. 5 Wesleyan picked up two wins in the past week. The Wolves (6-6-1) edged Buford Friday 1-0 on a goal by Cort Coxhead. Keeper Mitchell Robinson kept the clean sheet for Wesleyan. The Wolves then beat Lovett 3-2 in overtime Tuesday as Grant Sauer knocked in the game-winning goal with three minutes left in overtime. Coxhead and Will Sharon scored the other two goals for Wesleyan.
Class AAAAA No. 2 Pope beat Sequoyah 1-0 Tuesday as Luke Scanlan scored the lone goal early in the first half. Travis Parker got the shutout in goal. The Greyhounds (12-3) are now 8-0 in region play and have not lost to a Class AAAAA team yet this season.
No. 3 First Presbyterian beat Dooly County 8-0 Tuesday behind four goals from Bradley Mullis and three from Kevin Griggs. Spencer Ennis also found the back of the net for the Vikings.
Ryan Moran scored four times as No. 10 Mount Paran dominated Christian Heritage 10-0 Tuesday. … No. 1 Dalton (12-0-1) beat Allatoona 4-1 Tuesday. Eder Mora, Pepe Gardea, Justen Macias and Josh Satterfield scored for Dalton. Allatoona (8-3-1) actually tied the game at 1 on a goal by Griff Rousseau tied the game with 17 minutes gone in the first half.
