Duluth eliminates Berkmar, 62-47

After losing the region championship to Parkview last week, the Berkmar Lady Patriots looked to bounce back against Duluth in the first round of the State Tournament. The Lady Patriots lost to the Lady Wildcats 54-51 earlier in the year, and this time was no better luck as Duluth beats Berkmar 62-47 and moves on in the tournament.

The Lady Patriots could not get anything going at the start of the game only scoring six points in the first quarter. The second half was better, as they put up 13 points, but point guard Tyra Smith committed four fouls in the second quarter, two of them technical fouls, and did not return to the game until the fourth. As for Duluth, Mykala Walker helped put the game out of reach in the second quarter, scoring nine of her 17 points.

Berkmar had its best quarter in the third, cutting the lead to as little as four with a 9-5 run in the beginning of the quarter. However, the fourth quarter was a struggle for the Lady Patriots as they suffered through a four-minute stretch with only three points. Duluth’s Raven Brown scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth to ice the game for the Lady Wildcats. For Berkmar, Mariah Richardson and Ka’Vonne Towns each scored 13 points in the loss. Duluth will take on the winner of the Roswell-Cherokee contest in the round of 16.
