The Atlanta Dream announced today that the team has signed unrestricted free agent center Chantelle Anderson. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Anderson is making her return to the WNBA after missing the 2008 season due to an ACL injury.
“Chantelle is one of the most talented post players in the league and it’s been unfortunate that she has had some back-to-back injuries that have hurt her in terms of establishing herself,” said Dream Head Coach and General Manager Marynell Meadors. “At 6’6″ she has great ability and has the size to be a presence inside but can also face the basket and hit the outside shot or drive to the rim.”
Anderson, a 6-6 center, was originally selected with the second overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs. She was acquired by the Dream in the 2007 WNBA Expansion Draft but missed the entire season due to a torn ACL suffered during the offseason. Anderson’s promising career has been hindered by injuries, including a broken patella in 2006 and a torn Achilles tendon in 2007.
Anderson is the all-time leading scorer in Vanderbilt University women’s basketball history. In her collegiate career, Anderson was a three-time All-American, a three-time first team All-SEC Selection and the SEC Player of the Year in 2002. In 2008, she was inducted into the inaugural class of the new Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame.
“I’m really excited to sign with the Atlanta Dream,” said Anderson. “I’ve been here all off-season working out and making appearances in the community. Atlanta has really been a great city and a great organization. I’m really glad to now officially be a part of it.”
The Dream will tip off its second season on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 7 p.m. against the Indiana Fever. For more information and to purchase season tickets, fans can call 404.604.2626 or visit www.AtlantaDream.net.
