The Atlanta Dream announced today that they have waived guard Betty Lennox. The WNBA roster restrictions cap team rosters at 11 players, and the Dream made the move in anticipation of adding other free agents.
Lennox was the Dream’s top scorer in 2008 (the team’s inaugural season), averaging 17.5 points per game. The nine-year veteran started in 33 of 34 games after being acquired from Seattle during the 2008 WNBA Expansion Draft.
There was little doubt that Lennox and head coach/general manager Marynell Meadors had a rocky relationship at times last season, mainly due to what Lennox considered a lack of playing time. Still, Meadors offered kind parting words, stating, “We really appreciate what Betty contributed to this franchise in our inaugural season and we wish her the best. We hate to see her go, but really we needed to address our experience and strength at the small forward and center positions.”
The Dream open the 2009 season on June 6 against the Indiana Fever.
