Mill Creek offensive lineman Josh Fannin received his first college scholarship offer from Marshall on Wednesday. While the 2015 center prospect is thrilled with the offer, it adds a bit of intrigue to the atmosphere at his family’s Hoschton residence.
“My dad played at Marshall and my mom went to West Virginia,” laughed Fannin. “So it’s kind of a house divided.”
Fannin was born in Morgantown, the home of West Virginia University, but finds himself on Marshall’s side of things after getting an offer from the Thundering Herd.
“It is definitely a huge honor,” said Fannin. “I love the place. I’ve been going there ever since I was a little kid. My dad played there. I love the campus and it’s a good education. It’s just great knowing I get to continue on playing the sport I love.”
While Fannin is quite familiar with the Thundering Herd, he has also been receiving interest from other schools. Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, East Carolina and N.C. State have also been talking to the 6-foot-3, 285-pounder.
“Clemson and UNC have been recruiting me the hardest,” said Fannin about from where his next offer may come. “Coach (Chris Kapilovic) from UNC and Coach (Tony) Elliott from Clemson have contacted me the most.”
Most recently, Fannin played in the Elite Junior Classic at McEachern, an all-star game that featured some of the top juniors in the state. Fannin enjoyed himself quite a bit at the three-day event which led up to the game.
“It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had, to be honest,” he said. “I got to meet a bunch of cool guys who can play at the same level and speed. I had a lot of fun and made new friends.”
One part of the weekend, however, stood out above all else for the Mill Creek Hawk – “Definitely the food,” he said of the Taco Mac fare that was catered to the players during the weekend.
While Fannin was all smiles discussing the Elite Junior Classic, he became serious when talking about his upcoming senior season at Mill Creek. Fannin and the Hawks were possibly the best team in the state in 2013 to not make the playoffs. In ultra-tough Region 7-AAAAAA, the Hawks narrowly missed a postseason spot despite an impressive 6-4 season in which all four losses were close and came to ranked, playoff teams.
“We’re going through a lot of changes at Mill Creek,” he said. “A lot of things are going to be different here next season.”
Fannin impressed many scouts and recruiting experts at the Elite Junior Classic, which could lead to more Division I offers soon.
