QUICK HITS: Women’s hoops teams excel; can Braves land new OF?

Thursday night was a great one for local women’s college basketball, to say the least. While their male counterparts have struggled, all of the females came away with key victories tonight.

Up in Athens, No. 4-ranked Auburn was undefeated at 20-0 before falling to the Lady Dogs, 67-58. Georgia has now won three consecutive games, its most since winning four straight from Nov. 28-Dec. 3. … At Georgia State, the Lady Panthers recorded one of their biggest victories in school history, beating Old Dominion, 75-62. ODU has won 17 consecutive CAA titles and entered the game against Georgia State with an overall CAA record of 317-18. … As for Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets had no trouble against ACC rival Miami, emerging victorious, 68-42. Tech used a 13-0 run in the first half to take an 18-point lead at halftime and never looked back. The Yellow Jackets had beaten then-No. 2 North Carolina, 66-62, one week earlier before losing by 26 to Duke last Sunday.

Most believe the Braves are in need of a talented outfielder, and the AJC’s Braves beat writer Dave O’Brien couldn’t agree more. In his most recent blog, O’Brien lists the pros and cons of nabbing several big-name free-agent outfielders, such as Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu. (And should the team dare go after Andruw Jones again?)

The Hawks are sending Joe Johnson to the All-Star Game and Al Horford to the Rookie-Sophomore Game as a part of All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, Ariz., from Feb. 13-15. Add that to the Hawks maintaining the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference (on pace to host a playoff series!) and first-year GM Rick Sund is riding high. Check out this exclusive interview with Sund on Hawks.com.

Atlanta native Dwight Howard had quite an eventful week last week. In addition to receiving the most All-Star fan votes in history with 3,150,181 (Boston’s Kendrick Perkins had the second-most votes of East centers this year with 621,709), he also attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20. Read the phenom’s blog from the event here. (Howard also posted 22 points and 18 rebounds Thursday night, as Orlando deafeated Cleveland 99-88.)

Finally, on a national scale, the United States is planning to submit simultaneous bids to soccer’s governing body for the right to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. The U.S. hosted the event in 1994, which remains the highest-attended World Cup ever. The decision will likely be made in December 2010; next year’s World Cup will be held in South Africa and the 2014 Cup is scheduled to take place in Brazil.
