Atlanta’s own Dwight Howard breaks All-Star votes record

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has become the first player in NBA history to receive 3 million All-Star votes from the fans. When the final tally was released Thursday, Howard had totaled 3,150,181 votes to start for the East in the 2009 NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 15.

The 23-year-old star leads the NBA in rebounds, blocked shots and double-doubles. His total votes beat out the previous record of 2,558,278 for Yao Ming in 2005.

Howard starred at Atlanta’s Southwest Christian Academy as a high school athlete and decided to forgo college for an NBA career in 2004. The Magic selected him with the No. 1 overall pick that year.
