Two Games Added, New TV Partner On Board for the 23rd Edition of the High School Football Classic
The MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic, one of the most exciting days of high school football in the country, will move to a two-day event in 2014, adding four more high schools to the 23-year-old event for a total of seven action-packed games.
Sandy Creek, Archer, North Paulding and Creekview High Schools have accepted invitations to participate in the event and will play Friday night, Aug. 22, at McEachern High School’s Walter Cantrell Stadium, the largest high school stadium in the state. North Paulding will face Creekview in the opening game followed by Sandy Creek against Archer. All four teams made it into the GHSA playoffs this season while some of them advanced to the quarterfinals.
The MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic is also excited to announce that five new teams will be playing in the five games on Saturday at the Georgia Dome and there is a chance the Classic will have the defending state champions in the Class 6A, 5A and 4A classifications. Norcross, Tucker, and Carrollton, all playing for the state championships in their respective classifications this weekend, will join the Classic as well as Valdosta and Mill Creek, the latter making their first Corky Kell appearance. They will be joining Brookwood, McEachern, North Gwinnett (facing Norcross for the Class 6A title Saturday night), Colquitt County and Kell High Schools. On Saturday, Kell will open the day facing Carrollton, followed by Mill Creek vs. McEachern and Valdosta vs. Brookwood. The final two games, Tucker will face Norcross and Colquitt will match up with North Gwinnett.
The Classic, watched on television by more than 1.5 million viewers over the last three years, will also have a new television partner. Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), available in more than 5.5 million homes across 12 states, will televise all seven of the games over the two days. CSS is coming off its high school football season where it televised 16 games across the region, including nine in Georgia, and streamed 25 additional games on their digital network. CSS has become the regional leader in high
school football coverage providing scores from around the south, a weekly Southeastern Top 25 poll as well as game previews and stories, recruiting blogs, interactive chats and polls.
“The expansion of the Corky Kell Classic this year is something that we desired because of the large number of teams that are interested in playing and it makes the Classic a weekend event instead of one day,’’ said Dave Hunter, executive director of the MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic. “The games this year are as competitive as any we have had in our 22 years.’’
In addition to the games being available on television, 92.9 The Game (FM) will broadcast all of the games live on the radio for the second straight year.
