Hoover won yet another Alabama state championship while Dwyer edged East Lake in overtime in a thrilling state championship game in Florida. See these recaps and more below.
ALABAMA
Class 2A State Championship
Tanner 21, Washington County 13: Tanner won its second straight 2A title over Washington County. The teams were evenly matched and Tanner outgained Washington County 218 to 216 yards. Hayden Stephens was the difference-maker for the Rattlers and he carried the ball 23 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Deshun Freeman led the Tanner defense with 12 tackles and an interception.
Class 4A State Championship
Oneonta 28, Charles Henderson 10: After two straight Class 4A runner-up finishes, Oneonta finally took the podium with a dominant victory over the previously-unbeaten Trojans. Avery Reid rushed for three Oneonta touchdowns and the Redskins’ defense held Charles Henderson’s offense to just 75 yards rushing. The Redskins cruised offensively with with 453 total yards from scrimmage, including 326 rushing yards. Senior Terrell McDaniel paced the ground game with 163 yards on 19 carries.
Class 6A State Championship
Hoover 20, Auburn 3: Hoover blocked an Auburn punt late in the opening quarter and Chris Demoss recovered it to put the Buccaneers ahead 7-0. Bradrick Shaw caught a 40-yard shovel pass for a touchdown and rushed for a 1-yard score. This marks Hoover’s 30th consecutive win and the program’s 10th state championship.
FLORIDA
Class 7A State Semifinals
Dwyer 31, East Lake 24 (OT): Daniel Parr rushed for a Dwyer touchdown in overtime and Shawann Lurry intercepted East Lake quarterback Jake Hudson’s third-down pass attempt to seal the win. East Lake trailed 24-10 with 6:48 remaining, but forced overtime with a 65-yard George Campbell touchdown pass from Artavis Scott and a Scott interception that set up a Devin Abraham touchdown reception.
Class 2A State Championship
Champagnat 14, Lakeland Victory Christian 7: Champagnat won its first football state championship after inaugurating its football program four short years ago. Michael Frederick rushed for both Lions touchdowns and Champagnat finishes the season perfect at 14-0.
Class A State Championship
Trenton 14, Blountstown 0: Stephen Smith found Hamp Cheevers for a 55-yard touchdown reception to give Trenton a 7-0 lead at the half. In the third quarter Michael Smith intercepted Hunter Jordan’s pass and returned it for a Trenton touchdown that resulted in the final points of the game.
GEORGIA
Class 6A State Semifinals
Norcross 14, Colquitt County 9: In a rematch from last season’s state semifinals, defending champion Norcross topped the Packers and earned a trip to the Georgia Dome for Saturday’s state championship. Colquitt kicker Jose Vega hit three first-half field goals, but Norcross answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by James Keeling that cut the halftime deficit to 9-7. The Blue Devils held Colquitt scoreless in the second half and the Packers managed just 176 total yards of offense. Norcross took the lead with 6:12 remaining when quarterback A.J. Bush found Myles Autry for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Bush was effective running the ball and tallied a game-high 119 yards on the ground.
MISSISSIPPI
Class A State Championship
French Camp Academy 27, Smithville 6: Host French Camp won its first state championship behind quarterback Jesse Hosket, who threw for 187 yards, ran for a touchdown and had eight tackles on defense. Running back Michael Erving rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown as French Camp totaled 337 yards of offense compared to Smithville’s 99.
Class 2A State Championship
Bassfield 48, Calhoun City 7: This was host Bassfield’s sixth state title in school history and it finished 15-1 on the season. Bassfield running back Trodrick Daniels finished with 118 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Bassfield has now won three state titles since 2009, and the Yellow Jackets have outscored its opponents 83-7 in the past two Class AA state title games.
Class 6A State Championship
Oak Grove 14, Tupelo 7: Neither team scored in the first half, and Oak Grove opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Kirk McCarty to Cameron Myers. Tupelo responded with a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Quinn Tiggs on the ensuing drive. McCarty found Logan Scott on a fake field goal pass at the end of the third quarter. Oak Grove held on to win the game and the 6A state title.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Class 2A State Championship
Batesburg-Leesville 28, Silver Bluff 24: These two teams have met for the state title three times with Silver Bluff winning the first two meetings by one point each. This one was equally as thrilling as it took a defensive stop with time expiring for Batesburg-Leesville to win. Jacquiel Chandler scored three of Batesburg-Leesville’s touchdowns, including the game winner from two yards out with three minutes left in the game.
TENNESSEE
Class A State Championship
Union City 23, South Pittsburg 14: These teams played in the 2009 A championship and Union City came out on top then and again this year after opening up its 7-7 tie in the second quarter. Ricky Henry ran for two touchdowns and 101 yards to lead Union City. South Pittsburg linebacker Payne Mosely was named the defensive player of the game, with 19 tackles. Union City did not attempt a pass the entire game
Class 2A State Championship
Alcoa 25, Christ Presbyterian Academy 7: Alcoa’s Jaquez Tyson set a championship game record with 49 carries and added 278 rushing yards and three touchdowns to pace the Tornadoes. Alcoa’s Peyton Walls ran for a 28-yard touchdown in the first quarter before Tyson ran in the next three Tornadoes’ rushing scores.
Class 5A State Championship
Henry County 28, Knoxville-West 27: Seth Marshall put Knoxville West on the board first with an 18-yard touchdown run and Nathan Cottrell extended the lead to 14-0 with a 17-yard scamper. Henry County answered with a pair of touchdown runs by Jeremiah Godbott before the half. In the third quarter, Knoxville West took the lead after a 69-yard touchdown run by Nathan Cottrell.
Henry County’s R’Tario Perkins cut the lead with a 62-yard touchdown run but the Patriots missed the point after. Perkins found the endzone again on a 1-yard dive and a successful 2-point conversion gave Henry County its first lead of the game at 28-21. Knoxville West scored on a Justin Hodge run, but this time the Rebels missed the extra point and Henry County sealed the 28-27 win.
