American Heritage-Plantation (Fla.) 41, Hardee (Fla.) 7: The Patriots cruised in the second half after leading 10-7 at intermission and earned a trip to the state semifinals for the first time since 1988. Patriots’ running back Sony Michel had 18 carries for 260 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Michel has rushed for 632 yards and six touchdowns this postseason.
Hoover (Ala.) 31, Vestavia Hills (Ala.) 28: Host Hoover overcame a 18-point deficit with a touchdown pass from Jack Hutcheson to Leonard Wood to take the lead with three minutes left in the game. Hutcheson had two touchdowns as he hooked up with Cooper Carden for a touchdown earlier in the fourth quarter. The Bucs will play Auburn for the 6A state championship next Friday.
Maryville (Tenn.) 28, Blackman (Tenn.) 16: Host Maryville turned two Jauan Jennings’ interceptions into touchdowns to erase Blackman’s early 6-0 lead. The first touchdown was scored on a 1-yard Shawn Prevo touchdown run Kelby Brock hauled in the second score on a 7-yard endzone fade route from quarterback John Garrett. Garrett finished 16-of-18 passing and threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
McEachern (Ga.) 35, Collins Hill (Ga.) 32: Visiting McEachern saw heroics from Taj Griffin early and often in this shootout. Griffin had an 11-yard run in the first quarter to make it 14-3 and it seemed like McEachern was running away with it. After going up 28-10 in the third quarter, the Indians gave up 22 points and found themselves down by four with a minute to go. Griffin ran a punt back 85 yards for a touchdown and the Indians’ defense intercepted Collins Hill quarterback Tyler Herman with 11 seconds left to play inside the 3-yard line. The Indians will face North Gwinnett in the semifinals and feature the states’ only No. 3 seed vs. No. 3 seed matchup. North Gwinnett topped McEachern’s region rival Hillgrove 35-31 on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Northwestern (S.C.) 49, North Augusta (S.C.) 21: Host Northwestern was led by quarterback Mason Rudolph who had six passing touchdowns. He hooked up with Dupree Hart for a 22-yard touchdown, a three-yard touchdown and a 20-yard touchdown. Julian Shockley caught two touchdown passes, one for three yards and one for 10 yards. Quadarius Fair caught the last touchdown of the night, a 53-yard bomb from Rudolph. Northwestern will count on Rudolph again next week in the championship game against Stratford.
Tupelo (Ala.) 12, South Panola (Ala.) 3: Host Tupelo shocked Mississippi with stout defense in its win against South Panola. South Panola was only able to get one field goal in the game and was held scoreless in the second half. Tupelo will go on to the state championship against Oak Grove for 6A title next Friday.
