Football players are some of the busiest students during the season, but that doesn’t stop Robert Muschamp from giving his free time to those less fortunate than himself. The Darlington School linebacker gets a thrill from playing football, and wants to do all he can to help others experience the rush that only athletics can provide.
Darlington’s football team helps coach football camps for young boys in the area who want to learn more about the game.
“It is a fun time with the little guys and it’s also good to be someone they can look up to,” Muschamp said.
Muschamp understands the value of being a good role model in someone’s life and is also trying to give them the direction they need to excel in football.
Another thing Muschamp does is volunteer at the Special Olympics. His class worked with the Floyd County Special Olympics at Darlington where the event was hosted two years ago. Muschamp specifically helped in the wheelchair races and loved seeing how excited the kids were to participate in the events.
His baseball team also gets in the action by helping local Boys and Girls clubs. Last spring, the team travelled to Atlanta to work with the Boys and Girls Club that they donated equipment to. Muschamp says even the kids could tell how eager he and his team are to give back.
“I think they appreciated our help and the fact that we really wanted to help,” Muschamp explains, “It also helped us appreciate what we have.”
The event that is obviously the most important to Muschamp is the Light the Lake program that Darlington hosts. It is a program that raises money for local cancer charities with an all-night walking event to honor those who are fighting cancer or who have lost a loved one to cancer.
“I have always participated in this event because my brother is in remission from leukemia and I want to honor him and his fight whenever I can,” Muschamp said.
Muschamp has helped Darlington reach the playoffs this year and will hope to keep playing if the Tigers can beat Class A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy on Friday, but his help off the field is even more noteworthy. State titles and tackling records are impressive, but he’s spending his free time helping people enjoy sports the way he does. He’s being a role model for kids who really don’t have one in their life, and he’s supporting his brother in one of the most difficult fights there is. His physical abilities make him a hero on the field, but his heart and selflessness are what make him a hero off it.
