-Lowndes got off to a nightmare start in its 28-7 loss at Camden County. The Vikings turned the ball over five times, including a muffed punt and fumbled kickoff early in the first quarter, which led to a 21-0 deficit in the opening period. Camden County, meanwhile, continued to show that it does not miss former coach Jeff Herron or current Georgia Bulldogs Bryce Ramsey and J.J. Green as much as many predicted prior to the season.
Coach Welton Coffey has done a tremendous job keeping the train on the tracks. On Friday, Camden County hosts No. 1 Colquitt County in what is essentially the Region 1 championship game. It will be quite the battle between Camden’s multi-headed running attack face Colquitt’s high-powered passing attack.
-Warner Robins is the only team in the past five seasons to have defeated Northside in the regular season. The Demons’ win over their arch rival Friday ended the Eagles’ 38-game regular season winning streak that began in 2009 – after a loss to Warner Robins.
The loss was coach Kevin Kinsler’s first in the regular season as coach of the Eagles. The two Houston County neighbors are now tied at the top of Region 2-AAAAA. With the loss, Northside dropped from No. 1 to No. 7 while Warner Robins rocketed up to No. 6. While it was surely a painful loss by Northside, upsets like that in rivalry games are why we love high school football.
-Holy Innocents’ found a way to make the playoffs. The Golden Bears edged Pace Academy last week on a late field goal by Walker Thomas. Friday night, however, coach Ryan Livezey’s team overcame Class A-Private No. 2 Landmark Christian 29-28 after a Luke Wright pass to Jackson Miller for a two-point conversion that gave Landmark its winning margin. A Clay Pfohl touchdown run brought the Bears to within one prior to the conversion.
It was Holy Innocents’ third straight win and clinched a playoff berth out of Region 5-A. The loss was Landmark’s first of the season, just one week prior to its much-anticipated clash with No. 1 ELCA.
-Mays staked its claim in Region 6-AAAAA by taking down mighty Stephenson Saturday at Hallford Stadium. The Raiders are now in sole possession of second place in the region and claims victories over traditional powers Southwest DeKalb and M.L. King in addition to the win over the Jaguars. It was Mays’ first-ever win over Stephenson.
The Raiders’ strength is on the lines of scrimmage, where they boast Alabama-commitment Dallas Warmack and highly-regarded defensive end Natrez Patrick, both juniors. Mays faces Tucker Friday night with a chance to really turn some heads. Despite the wins over the three teams mentioned above, the Raiders also have losses to Carver-Atlanta and Arabia Mountain. Mays hasn’t beaten Tucker since 2006.
-Folks in Marietta won’t forget the name Ian Shannon any time soon. The junior kicker drilled a 49-yard field goal to give his Blue Devils a crucial win over Region 4-rival North Cobb Friday night in Acworth.
It was the Warriors’ first region loss of the season and caused a three-way tie at the top of Region 4. Marietta, meanwhile, will play Harrison Friday in the regular-season finale for the region’s fourth and final playoff spot. It would be the Devils’ third straight playoffs appearance under coach Scott Burton.
