Another milestone was set at Kennesaw State on Friday night as football head coach Brian Bohannon and athletic director Vaughn Williams unveiled the first football helmet at the soccer game against Ole Miss.
The helmet is gold with the “KS” logo on the sides with a black facemask and a custom black strip running from the front to the back. The helmet was one of three fans could vote for in two-week long survey. The other two were the black helmet with the “KS” logo and a gold facemask, and a black helmet with the black facemask and the primary logo.
The gold helmet was the clear-cut favorite as it received nearly 60 percent of the vote. Nearly 10,000 fans, students and alumni took part in the survey.
The design and concept of the three helmets was a process that took months to develop with the help of Adidas, which is the official apparel provider of Kennesaw State Athletics. After the gold helmet was unveiled the KSU Bookstore started selling football-related merchandise with the helmet on display at Fifth-Third Bank stadium. The merchandise will also be available at the campus bookstore.
The unveiling of the helmet comes on the heels of the team announcing they will be an associate member of the Big South conference as soon as play begins in 2015. The membership will last four years and football will be the only sport at KSU to join the Big South. The other teams at Kennesaw will remain in the Atlantic Sun.
The next step for the football program is to continue recruiting so they can have their first signing class by February. After that, the program will unveil their home, away and alternate uniforms which will be in the spring. In the fall, the Owls will have their first practice and that will follow with a spring football game in the spring of 2015.
