No. 19 Norcross at Parkview 7:30 p.m. (Streamed here)
The reputation that Norcross built during its state championship season a year ago has been placed under review after falling 55-0 in a nationally-televised game to Florida’s Booker T. Washington the first week of the 2013 season.
The frustrated Blue Devils went straight into a bye week following the loss, and are likely eager to get back on the field where a solid Parkview team awaits. Norcross topped Parkview 20-0 last year, and the Panthers bounced back, making it all the way to the state quarterfinals. The Panthers lost their season opener 28-14 to Peachtree Ridge and have won four state titles.
White Station (Tenn.) at No. 24 Whitehaven (Tenn.) 7:00 p.m.
Whitehaven, the defending Tennessee Class 6A state champion, looks to keep the big train rolling Friday when it hosts region foe White Station. White Station will rely on dual-threat quarterback Cedrick Wilson Jr. to keep the powerful Whitehaven offense off the scoreboard. Wilson leads the Spartans in rushing as well as passing this past fall. For Whitehaven (2-0), it’s full-speed ahead. Last week they easily dispatched Fairley 63-8, scoring 28 points in the second quarter. The Tigers’ ground game was in full effect thanks to four touchdowns by running back Ramadi Warren, a transfer from Christian Brothers who rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2012.
No. 1 Booker T. Washington (Fla.) at No. 5 Miami Central (Fla.) 7:00 p.m.
This heavyweight bout pits two of the top teams in the southeast. Tornadoes Quarterback Treon Harris is an FSU commit and finished 23 of 28 passing for 287 yards and five touchdowns in Washington’s Week 1 win over Norcross (Ga.). Miami Central posted an impressive season-opening win as well, with a 44-13 rout of Dwyer (Fla.). Five-star running back and Florida commit Dalvin Cook and teammate Joseph Yearby accounted for 380 yards on only 24 carries and scored six touchdowns.
No. 2 Karr (La.) at St. Paul (La.) 7:30 p.m.
The defending 4A state champion Cougars will open their season at St. Paul, which fell 14-7 to Louisiana power Archbishop Rummel in its opener. Speedy Noil is a five-star receiver for Karr, and defensively the Cougars return Gerald Willis, Donnie Alexander, Joyan Williams, Juwan Offray, Jaevon Walton and Bryan Anderson (all college-bound prospects). St. Paul’s Marcus Gaines is a Louisiana Tech commit who adds versatility to the Wolves’ offense.
No. 7 Northwestern (S.C.) at South Aiken (S.C.) 7:30 p.m.
Northwestern passed its first two tests of the 2013 season, with a commanding 51-19 win over Gaffney (S.C.), and a 38-17 win over Charlotte Catholic (N.C.). The Trojans will once again be tried as they travel to 1-1 South Aiken. Northwestern quarterback Mason Rudolph threw two touchdowns and rushed for three scores against Charlotte Catholic, and tossed five touchdowns against Gaffney in the opener. Wideout Quadarius Fair has been the go-to guy, catching five touchdowns in the Trojans’ two games. Applying pressure to the Rudolph will be South Aiken’s Rasool Clemons. The 6-foot-6 junior defensive end has been offered by Clemson, Florida State, Tennessee and Virginia.
No. 22 Gainesville (Ga.) at No. 21 Buford (Ga.) 7:30 p.m.
This matchup pits Georgia’s 2012 Class AAA champion Buford, with the Class AAAAA state champion Gainesville. Quarterback Deshaun Watson paces Gainesville, and the Clemson commit threw 50 touchdowns and rushed for 24 touchdowns during his record-setting junior season. In the season opener, Watson continued his blazing pace and tossed 368 yards and four touchdowns in a 58-28 win over West Forsyth. The Buford offense saw six different Wolves players find the endzone, and topped Elbert County 41-0 last week.
