Georgia State student-athletes Mark Steeds and Janel Blancett have been named the 2008 Men’s and Women’s CAA Cross Country Athletes of the Year. Steeds earned All-American honors with a 12th-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, becoming Georgia State’s first cross country All-American. Janel Blancett enjoyed her first All-CAA nod after leading the women’s team as one of the top finishers of the season. She placed second overall at the CAA Championships, helping the Panthers to a third-place finish and finished 15th overall out of 156 runners at the recent NCAA South Regionals to earn All-Region honors.
Men’s soccer’s Filipe Carvalho has been named to the All-South Atlantic Region Second Team for the 2008 season. Carvalho is the first Georgia State men’s soccer player to earn this honor since 2004. “I always knew he was one of the best goalkeepers in the country and I know he has the ability to play at the next level,” remarked head coach Kerem Daser. “He always has a smile on his face and is so humble and down to earth. He was a pleasure to coach for four years and we hope to find more Filipes in the future for our Georgia State soccer team.”
ON THE COURT
Men’s basketball dropped its game to Florida State last Saturday, 62-57, but showed some fight after trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half. Trae Goldston led the way with a career-high 24 points, while Joe Dukes had 12 points. “We fought hard to get back in the game. I’m disappointed about getting so far behind, but I’m happy that we never gave up,” said Georgia State coach Rod Barnes. “We’ve definitely improved in the last 10 days, and now I think we’re headed in the right direction.” The Panthers will play at Georgia Tech on Wednesday and then return home Saturday to host Coastal Carolina.
I caught up with former Panther Lamont McIntosh last week. He’s playing in Germany with the Artland Dragons and is playing pretty well. Through 14 games, he is averaging 11 points and three rebounds. Another former Panther, Reo Logan, is currently playing in Japan after spending last year in the CBA.

Baseball’s Brandon Williams has been named East Cobb Baseball’s Most Valuable Player for 2008. The Georgia State freshman played for the East Cobb Mets 18-and-under team during his final year in East Cobb baseball. Williams was also the leading hitter and RBI producer for Kell High School and was named to the All-Cobb County First Team last year.
