Daniel Imatorbhebhe was perhaps the most impressive receiving prospect I saw at the Georgia Invitational 7-on-7. The North Gwinnett target stands 6-foot-4 and has a wingspan that he is still filling out. In the semifinal game against Lassiter, he showed the full arsenal for a future college receiver. He opened the game by catching a short pass and burning the defense for a 35-yard score. The ability to catch the ball and get up the field quickly makes him a dangerous over-the-middle target for senior quarterback Hayden Sphire. The tournament’s offensive MVP went to Sphire who was finding all his playmakers in their 1st place finish.
Later in the game, Imatorbhebhe hauled in difficult grabs in traffic to keep drives alive, and had his second score on a jump-ball pass. The jump ball showcased the lengthy Imatorbhebhe’s ability to bring down the ball at the highest point. The junior has the trust of the coaching staff and quarterback to go up and make a play out of the slot. Imatorbhebhe appears to be poised for a breakout season and could be one of the states’ best receiving prospects by the end of it.
Caleb Scott is another North Gwinnett wideout that will likely see an increase in offers once the 2013 season starts. The sure-handed senior stands 6-foot-3 and was catching anything that came his way. Scott went up over two Trojan defenders for a touchdown, and then iced the game with a diving one-handed grab to seal the win. Scott finished 2012 with 38 catches for 684 yards and 11 touchdowns. During his one-handed catch, a Lassiter defender was holding Scott, but to no avail. Running back C.J. Leggett will be able to power the Bulldogs’ offense on the ground and big plays will be sparked by Scott when they need them. Scott has been offered from Air Force, Furman, Mercer and UAB and knows how to fight for the ball. The towering duo of Scott and Imatorbhebhe will join 6-foot-3 Nate Brown in stretching the field for the Bulldogs in 2013.
Nate Brown is still one of the leaders of the Bulldogs’ weapons in the passing game and comes off a successful season with 41 catches for 491 yards and nine touchdowns. Brown enters his senior season with offers from Missouri, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Georgia State. This North Gwinnett receiving corps is extremely deep and equally underrated.
Defensive Prowess
Defensively 7-on-7′s are not easy. Without being able to give a receiver a shot when he leaps over the middle gives the advantage to the offense every play. Even while holding back the physical aspects of his game, Lassiter’s Chris Murphy was able to impress the most. The senior committed to Arkansas on July 14 and was named the Defensive MVP of the Georgia Invitational. It was Murphy’s ability to break up pass plays that allowed him to stand out, and the shutdown corner still had a physical presence about him. His experienced use of hands and ability to swat the ball free with force was matched with his air-tight coverage. The Lassiter standout continues to prove why he is one of the best lockdown corners in the state.
