Last June, Johnson-Gainesville named Jason Roquemore its new head coach just two months before the season began. Roquemore came from his previous job at North Cobb Christian where he served as defensive coordinator for two seasons. Paul Friel’s resignation and return to his home state Maryland led to about 40 applications from coaches looking to fill the vacancy. Ultimately, Roquemore was hired and the Knights players were “genuinely excited for a fresh start.”
That fresh start could not have come soon enough after going 5-25 from 2009-2011. In 2012 under Roquemore’s guidance, Johnson finished the season with a winning record at 6-4 and that new beginning encouraged his team heading into 2013.
“Our goal is to continue to take the next step this season,” said Roquemore.
FB Luis Hernandez is the leader of the team and is a bulldozer in the Knights’ double-slot offensive attack. The playbook is the same seen with Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson’s triple option, and the run-first philosophy faired well for them.
This offense requires a lot of practice and players need to be able to read the defense well and Roquemore has guys who can do this.
Jessie Griggs will play in the backfield, while also starting at linebacker next season. On the offensive line is Caleb Herrin and Jordan Green, who fit in well with the fast-moving group of linemen.
The quarterback for next season remains a closed book and Roquemore is choosing to keep that information private. Chase Sims is a guy could potentially be a two-way starter at defensive back and quarterback. At wideout is Jamison Owens who also plays linebacker and provides excellent blocking in the perimeter.
The passing game will only compliment this offense, and Roquemore makes it clear what his team wants to do offensively.
“Have you seen us play before?” asked Roquemore. “We throw the ball maybe 10 times a game.”
The run game will continue to pace the offense, and the Knights will look to improve on their 25 points-per game average this season. Defensive improvements will be the formula for getting the Knights into the playoffs. In 2012, they gave up 28 points per game and this is an offense that is built to control the clock and keep the defense off the field. Steve Rodriguez should be able to make an impact on the defensive line this year and help lift the unit. The Knights open at West Hall and Oglethorpe County before hosting an excellent North Hall team Sept. 6.
