Ultimately an emphasis on the defensive ability of Malkom Parrish steered the 4-star athlete to choose UGA over Georgia Tech. Parrish leads a Class AA Brooks County team that finished 12-1 last season and beat Class AAAAAA Valdosta 28-24 in an early season matchup. Parrish is an excellent quarterback and was being recruited to run Paul Johnson’s option offense at Georgia Tech, but was more interested in becoming a defensive standout with the Bulldogs. Brooks County head coach Maurice Freeman is big on defense and physical football, and will openly tell you that at Brook’s County “We do bring the hammer.”
The extent of Parrish’s defense was not talked about until recently when the 5-foot-9, 186-pound athlete began shining at offseason camps. At the Rivals.com Camp series this past April with more than 200 of the Southeast’s top recruits going through the different drills and competitions, Parrish was named the camp’s best defensive performer. In one-on-one coverage, he intercepted the first four balls thrown his way. Another play quarterback Tyler Queen did not even throw the football because the receiver was covered so well.
His commitment to Georgia comes two days after the state’s No. 1-ranked running back, Nick Chubb announced his decision. As a junior, Chubb rushed for 2,721 yards and 38 touchdowns on a team that only played 10 games, failing to make the playoffs at 6-4. He has 62 rushing touchdowns in his last two seasons. Chubb joins five-star running back Sony Michel out of Florida in 2014 class. Peachtree Ridge safety, Nick Glass, is one of the other big names along with Heard County offensive lineman Jake Edwards and Miami receiver Gilbert Jones who both committed this past weekend.
