Round 2 playoff blog

The first round was memorable, but the second round should really bring the fireworks. Here’s what to watch for tonight around the state for high school football.

TOO EARLY

For football fans in the Kingsland area, you will be treated to a great semifinal second-round matchup when Camden County hosts Northside-Warner Robins. It would have been interesting to see how Northside would have handled a Class 5A, Region 1 schedule last season with the team it had last year, but this season the Eagles earned the No. 2 seed in their league and get punished—severely—by having to face Camden in the Round of 16. Conrad Nix’s club will be up against it in the home of the Wildcats, one of the toughest places to win in the country as far as high school football goes.

‘STOCK’S UP

Some people in the Score office were eyeing the Woodstock-Walton matchup in Round 1 as a possible upset … some people were right. Woodstock certainly has a chance to continue to raise its … um … profile with another upset at Norcross, a team that has faltered in the playoffs in recent years despite high expectations. Look out for this one, because the Wolverines are playing some of the best ball in the state.

LOOKING AHEAD

Things look like they are setting up for a Westside-Macon vs. Tucker matchup in the quarterfinals in Class 4A. Westside has Jonesboro this Friday, Tucker has Hillgrove. It’s unclear if Westside has really been tested this year … the team dominated a Thomas County Central squad that just fell to a 5-5 Ware County team in the first round. Tucker would have to travel outside of the metro area, but the Tigers have already done that; they beat an excellent Brunswick team (which is up against Griffin this week in the 4A playoffs) on the road in the first game of the season. Tucker will be ready; will the Seminoles be ready to put themselves in title contention?

REMATCH!

A few teams will be meeting for the second time this season:

Harrison at Peachtree Ridge (Previous meeting: Harrison won 13-3)

Holy Innocents’ at Wesleyan (Previous meeting: HI won 7-6)
