Georgia State’s basketball season has drawn to a close following a 90-84 overtime loss to CAA leader Northeastern Wednesday. Due to their departure for the Sun Belt following this season, the Colonial Athletic Association decided to bar the Panthers’ basketball team from postseason play, eliminating any chance coach Ron Hunter’s team had of reaching the NCAA tournament. The Panthers finished the season one game under .500 at 15-16, but with a winning record of 10-8 in the conference.
FALSE START
After starting the season 6-11, the Panthers rallied late in the year to get back to .500 during conference play. The early season struggles occurred during a very tough stretch of games and were aided by the inexperience of a young team. A leader emerged mid-way through the year in R.J. Hunter. He developed into one of the most dynamic scorers not only in the conference, but in the entire country and began to receive praise for his scoring prowess. With the move up in competition next season, the conference stretch will be more difficult and demanding, but the growth the Panthers experienced throughout this season will have them better prepared. Only one player will be lost to graduation, James Vincent, so the chemistry should only grow from here.
