Mike Owens was named head coach at Chattahoochee Friday morning. Owens confirmed his new position with Score Atlanta this afternoon.
“Chattahoochee is a phenomenal program with a long tradition of excellence in the school and in all the (athletics) programs, and I couldn’t be excited to work with such high-class people and a high-class program,” said Owens.
Owens was defensive coordinator at Brookwood prior to becoming coach at Chattahoochee. The new Cougars coach is unsure if any Brookwood assistants will accompany him to Chattahoochee and what assistants he will retain at the north Fulton school.
“That whole process has just started,” Owens said. “(Crowder) had several guys that are leaving with him, so we’ll have to replace the quality coaches that he had. There’s a lot of quality coaches there. Tom Hall is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country and I’ve spoken with him. But right now there’s no new coaches coming in. That’s be a whole process of analyzing the program and seeing what the needs are.”
Owens will replace former Chattahoochee coach Terry Crowder, who resigned to take over the program at Creekview. Owens spoke with Crowder about the job after Crowder left and was encouraged by Crowder to pursue the opportunity.
Owens plans to run a similar program to Brookwood’s, which means winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
“Everything in football starts at the line of scrimmage,” Owens said. “You’ve got to be good on defense and good on the offensive and defensive lines no matter what concepts you’re running. We’re going to be a multiple threat offensive system and an attacking defense.”
Owens is not a first-time head coach, as he guided Peachtree Ridge from 2003-2004 before going to Brookwood as defensive coordinator in 2005. The Presbyterian graduate began his coaching career in Georgia in 1983 when Dave Hunter made him his first hire at now-defunct Peachtree High School.
