The football season is winding down and a number of players have stood out throughout the course of the season. Here are the ones that our staff selected for the 2008 Score Prep Cobb All-County Team.
OFFENSE
Quarterback: Hutson Mason, Lassiter – The junior quarterback adapted quickly to new head coach Chip Lindsey’s offense. He leads the county in passing with over 3,000 yards and leading the Trojans to an 8-2 regular-season record and a playoff berth.
Running back: Michael Boydston, Walton – Boydston transferred from Kell and became the Raiders’ heart and soul on offense, amassing 1,859 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.
Running back: Rajaan Bennett, McEachern – A real big-play threat, the junior eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark despite not being healthy for much of the season.
Wide receiver: Marlon Anthony, Kell: Despite a slight drop-off in numbers due to a more balanced offense, the 6-foot-5 senior put fear into the hearts of defenses all season.
Wide receiver: Price Garrett, Walton – The senior regularly came up with big catches for Walton and finished the year with 73 catches for 1,055 yards and seven touchdowns.
Tight end: Philip Lutzenkirchen, Lassiter – A solid performer before this season, Lutzenkirchen has gotten plenty of recognition for his amazing plays (see one of them on YouTube) and steady receiving numbers this year.
Offensive lineman: Camden Wentz, Lassiter – The glue of the Trojans’ offensive line, Wentz and his mates give the high-scoring Lassiter offense a chance to make the plays they make.
Offensive lineman: Nick Johnson, Harrison – The experienced senior helped clear holes for running back Robbie Godhigh and a high-powered Hoya offense.
Offensive lineman: Kyle Woestmann, Walton – A solid two-way performer who helped paved the way for Boydston while providing protection for one of the county’s most efficient passing attacks.
Offensive lineman: Zach Vrtis, Kennesaw Mountain – Along with Jay Finch, gave the Mustangs a formidable offensive front and nearly helped lead the team to a playoff appearance after a 6-4 season.
Offensive lineman: Justin Williams, Sprayberry – Williams was the veteran on a Yellow Jacket offensive line that featured accomplished quarterback Forest Holt and running back David Carter.
DEFENSE
Defensive end: Brandon Burrows, Walton – Teaming with fellow Raider defensive end David Paulsen, when Burrows was good, he was really good, finishing the season with double-digit sacks.
Defensive end: Derrick Lott, North Cobb – The Georgia commit already has the look of a college defensive lineman, as he combines the size of a tackle with the quickness of an end.
Defensive tackle: Kenny Mackey, Harrison – A key cog in a tough Hoya defense, his play made opponents think twice before running up the middle against Harrison.
Defensive tackle: Jay Finch, Kennesaw Mountain – The Georgia Tech commit made his presence felt for the Mustangs defense with big plays and was a nightmare blocking assignment for opposing offenses.
Linebacker: Rip Rowan, Lassiter – An athletic and tough linebacker, Rowan is all over the field for the Trojans. He is an unsung hero for Lassiter’s dream season.
Linebacker: Scott Willoch, Walton – Showcased a real nose for the ball, pacing the Raiders in tackles in addition to being a leader on the defense.
Linebacker: Emmanuel Edouarzin, McEachern – Coming over from South Cobb, Edouarzin quickly established himself as a factor on the Indian defense, leading the unit week in and week out.
Cornerback: Kennard Backman, Whitefield Academy – Backman patrols the secondary for the Wolfpack, repeatedly making big plays, and is also one of the county’s top receivers.
Cornerback: Alan Grant, Lassiter – A big-play cornerback, Grant can be dangerous for quarterbacks to test with his speed and nose for the ball.
Safety: Douglas Ellis, Hillgrove – An impressive athlete who has proven to be a captain of the Hawks’ defensive backfield, while also being a key wide receiver.
Safety: Brian Randolph, Kell – The sophomore safety led the Longhorns’ defense with over 100 combined tackles and three interceptions.
KICKERS/SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker: Troy Postell, McEachern – Was a reliable weapon for the Indian offense and ended up being a difference-maker in several games.
Punter: Brady Biggers, Walton – Biggers handled all kicking duties for the Raiders. His punting regularly put opposing teams into bad field position.
Kick returner/Punt returner: Robbie Godhigh, Harrison – One of the most exciting players in the county, Godhigh can make spectacular gains any time he touches the ball.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Michael Boydston, Walton – Anyone doubting Boydston’s impact on Walton’s season need only to look at the Raiders’ 28-7 playoff loss to Woodstock. The senior played sparingly because of injury and the Raiders’ offense did not perform up to its standards. In addition to his gaudy numbers, Boydston provided Walton with a big-time threat in the backfield.
