It would be hard to find a football team that had a more gut-wrenching second half to its season than the Mays Raiders. The football team sat undefeated going into its game against Banneker on Oct. 18. After two single-digit losses in a row, the Raiders were fighting for their playoff lives. First up was Lithia Springs on Oct. 31. Mays put a conscious effort towards running the ball and came out with a 21-13 victory to end its two-game slide. Torey Bowens carried the ball for two touchdowns and 117 yards, leading Mays to the victory. Bowens was helped out by his running mate Mario Turner, who scored on an 8-yard run. With the loss, Mays had to defeat Whitewater in the final game of the season to make the playoffs. The Wildcats, a team Mays had already defeated this season, took control from the get-go on their way to a 35-7 victory. … The boys cross country team took ninth at the Region 5-AAAA Championship meet on Nov. 1 at Sandy Creek. Douglas Jackson led the team, finishing in 26th place.
