Basketball teams prepare for season; volleyball enjoys three-match win streak

The men’s basketball team scrimmaged on Tuesday night in preparation for the upcoming 2008-09 season. The team opens up with an exhibition against North Greenville at home on Nov. 6. The women’s basketball team opens with an exhibition against Emmanuel College on Tuesday (Nov. 4). KSU was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun this year behind East Tennessee State. Neither team is eligible for postseason play this season due to their recent transitions into Division I. The Lady Owls are led by 2007-08 Atlantic Sun Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Britteny Henderson. The senior forward from Atlanta was picked to repeat as conference player of the year.

The volleyball team swept Campbell University last Friday in Buies Creek, N.C., to win its third straight volleyball match. All of the wins came against Atlantic Sun competition, allowing the Lady Owls to improve their record to 5-17 overall and 4-10 in the conference. Junior hitter Asjia Stokes led the team with 16 kills. Stokes also had a .609 kill percentage, which is the highest of any Atlantic Sun player with a minimum of 12 kills. The 16 kills matched a personal season-high. Sabrita Gulley helped out with 11 kills. The Lady Owls hope to ride the momentum of their winning streak into a road trip to Florida this weekend. KSU will play Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The soccer team (10-4-4, 5-2-2) shut out Campbell 2-0 last Wednesday in the Lady Owls’ final road game of the regular season. It was KSU’s third win in a row. Sophomore Yasha Blount and freshman Shelby Cosby scored goals for the Black and Gold. The Lady Owls conclude their regular season at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Mercer.
