CAA holds annual basketball media day; Verwey named conference’s Golfer of the Week

With the start of the season just around the corner, I spent last Wednesday up in Washington at the annual CAA basketball preseason media day event hosting our radio show. It’s a two-hour show where we interview as many coaches as time allows, including Rod Barnes and Lea Henry, and getting everyone’s insights on what they think about their teams and the upcoming season. In regards to practice so far, Barnes said, “We’re throwing a lot at them, and so far, I like what I see. We have a long way to go, but the talent is there if we’ll continue to work hard. With our numbers and our depth, we’re able to practice at a high tempo, which I like. That’s how we want to play, so that’s how we need to practice every single day.” The men’s team has been picked to finish sixth in the preseason CAA poll with Leonard Mendez named to the CAA preseason All-Conference First Team. The team will play exhibition games Thursday against Oglethorpe and Nov. 6 against Clark Atlanta.

On the women’s side, the Panthers are eighth in the preseason predicted order of finish. Brittany Hollins was named to the preseason CAA’s Second Team while Danyiell McKellar was named All-CAA Honorable Mention. The Panthers play an exhibition game against Georgia Southwestern on Nov. 13.

ON THE GREEN

Iliska Verwey has been named CAA Golfer of the Week for the second time this season, following her medalist performance in Greenville, N.C., to lead the women’s golf team to its second team victory of the year at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University. Verwey posted scores of 75-68-73 for a total of 216 (plus-3). Her final-round 73 was good enough to pass second-round leader Abby Bools during the final day of competition. Verwey held on to her lead to record her individual victory.

Former Panther Ty Harris shot a final-round 5-over 77 and became the third former golfer this year to advance to the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School. Harris, who finished tied for 19th, advanced after four rounds at St. Johns Golf and Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla. Kasper Jorgenson and Joel Sjoholm already have advanced to the second stage of European PGA Tour qualifying earlier this month.

SOCCER RESULTS

Women’s soccer lost its Senior Day game, 2-0, to Drexel last Sunday. The loss dropped Georgia State to 11-8-0 (4-6-0). “We made plenty of good plays to win the game,” according to head coach Domenic Martelli. “When we create as many chances as we did, but didn’t finish early, it changes the whole complexion of the game. It hurts to have to change what we’re trying to do when we have to press the issue.”

The men’s soccer team was shut out 2-0 by George Mason last Saturday night. The Panthers drop to 4-7-4, 0-5-3 with three games remaining in the season. “I feel that we played the best team in the conference tonight,” remarked head coach Kerem Daser.  “This is definitely the best team I’ve seen all year.”
