Softball concludes season; football races heating up

The softball state champions were crowned last Saturday at the Columbus Softball Complex. In Class 5A, Mill Creek won its first state title behind the pitching of Florida State commit Morgan Bullock. The senior pitcher tossed a complete game three-hitter to earn the 3-2 victory over East Coweta. Bullock was a hero on offense as well, knocking in the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout.

Another first-time winner, Marist, knocked off the reigning champion (Northgate) on Thursday, and then marched to the title with wins over Whitewater on Friday and Saturday. Junior pitcher Lori Spingola earned the deciding 2-0 win on Saturday, and Dana Middleton accounted for both of the War Eagles’ runs (RBI, run scored) in the victory. … It was business as usual in Class 3A, as Oconee County picked up its seventh softball title, the most of any program in the state. Head coach Brian Dickens (who, in his 15 years as coach, has won all of the school’s titles) got a complete game out of pitcher Courtney Poole to get the 2-1 win in the final game against Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe. … In Class 2A, Buford won its second straight title behind the pitching of Karly Fullem, who got her 16th win of the year in the final game against Calhoun. The 2-1 win was the Wolves’ 30th victory in a row this year. Buford pitchers only gave up one run in four state playoff games. … Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy continued its reign of dominance in the state’s lowest classification, defeating Gordon Lee to pick up its third straight title. ELCA pitcher Hope Rush went the distance in the final game, earning the 3-0 win.

WEEK 9 RESULTS

Two top-10 football teams went down in Class 5A last Friday, as Lassiter defeated Walton 31-24 and McEachern shocked Harrison 48-33. It was both the Raiders’ and Hoyas’ first losses of the season. … Wesleyan scored a road upset over No. 7 Athens Academy last Friday, 17-7. The Wolves (7-2, 5-0 Region 8-A) have one regular season game, against Athens Christian, remaining. … Class 4A No. 2 Marist fought off No. 7 Southwest DeKalb at home, 27-21. Both teams were undefeated in Region 6 coming into the contest. … In what would have been the upset of the year, Class 2A No. 1 Buford came back in the last minutes against No. 9 Blessed Trinity to win 14-10. Trailing 10-7, Buford’s defense held strong on a fourth-and-goal on its own 1-yard line with less than three minutes to play. The Wolves then drove the length of the field to pull out the victory at home.
