Football stays unbeaten, softball bows out in Elite Eight and volleyball makes Final Four

The football team moved to 8-0 with a 28-7 win over Grady, all but guaranteeing the Golden Lions a No. 1 seed heading into the Region 5-AAA playoff in two weeks. Brendonn Jones scored on a 15-yard run to start the scoring, and Cole Moon barreled in for scores from 2 and 4 yards out to make it a three-touchdown game in the second quarter. Moon scored again in the fourth quarter on a 43-yard run to ice the game. He finished with 174 yards on 20 carries. Riverwood represents the final regular season test for Pius on Friday at 7:30 p.m. … The softball team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at the Class 3A Elite Eight to end its season. The Golden Lions would have advanced to the state championship game if they had won. Pepper Gay gave up just two hits in the loss. “We feel like making the Final Four was a tremendous accomplishment,” head coach Joe Winland said afterwards. … The volleyball team heads to the State Semifinals on Thursday after sweeping through Mary Persons, Ringgold and Northside-Columbus in the first three rounds. The team has yet to lose a game in the state tourney.
