Football wins sixth straight; volleyball enters Final Four

The football team won two games in the past two weeks to run its winning streak to six games. On Oct. 17, Woodward (6-2, 6-0) celebrated Homecoming by defeating Rutland 52-18. The win clinched a spot for the War Eagles in the Class 3A state playoffs. Delino DeShields scored three touchdowns for Woodward. The following Friday, Woodward won another Region 4-AAA game against Mary Persons by a score of 28-9. Senior running back Juwan Thompson led the War Eagles with 203 rushing yards. Woodward faces Jackson (8-0, 6-0) on Friday. The winner will clinch the region title. … The No. 2-ranked volleyball team (33-13) advanced to the state tournament’s Final Four by winning the Area 4 and sectional tournaments without losing a single game. The biggest win was over Columbus, which had beaten Woodward earlier in the season. “We certainly had to gear up for them,” explained head coach Tad Sahara. “We just did a good job of playing as a team and executing well.” The Lady War Eagles play in the Final Four on Thursday.
