If the West Forsyth Wolverines are to overtake Chattahoochee in the new Region 6-AAAAAA, coach Frank Hepler and offensive coordinator Adam Clack will need a strong season from quarterback A.J. Erdely. While the Wolverines have a strong defense returning and more region road games than home games, the key will be Erdely according to Clack.
“We are very excited to have AJ back at the helm this year,” said Clack. “Having a quarterback entering his third year as a starter is a nice luxury as a coach and it allows us to expand our scheme.”
The Wolverines received nearly 2000 yards through the air from Erdely last season, and Clack is hoping that he can bump that number up, especially with several weapons departing from one season ago.
“AJ is very gifted physically,” said Clack. “We knew that when he first walked onto our campus. He has worked very hard to develop his craft, but without a doubt, I am most proud of his development as a team leader.”
Erdely led the team all the way to the third round of the playoffs last year before bowing out to eventual champion Grayson. Erdely helped the team average 29 points per game, and he will be the key if this team is to earn a region championship after building from 7-4 to 11-2 during his first two years as a starter.
“I think (having Erdely back as a three-year starter) is even more important to his teammates because it gives them an element of familiarity that will hopefully lead to confidence,” said Clack. “He has earned the respect of the coaches and his teammates both through his play and his dedication to this team.”
Erdely has committed to Middle Tennessee State, but expect one of the most under-the-radar quarterbacks in the state to have yet another stout season, topped off perhaps by a region title.
“We hope that last year’s playoff victories will be a tipping point for this program,” said Clack. “Entering last year I feel like we were still a little unsure if we could win on the state level. Now, we know we can, and the confidence gained from that is invaluable.
