OVER AT TURNER
The rosters for both the American and National League All-Star teams were recently released and two Braves made the National League team. Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will be making his sixth appearance and fifth start. He has not started in an All-Star game since 2001, though he has now won the voting at third base four times. Braves catcher Brian McCann will be joining Jones in New York for the game in a reserve role after losing in the fan voting to Chicago Cubs rookie catcher Geovany Soto. At only 24, McCann has made three All-Star games in as many years as a pro, something even Hank Aaron did not accomplish during his tenure with Braves. The Cubs placed seven players on the roster, more than any other National League team. The game is scheduled to take place at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday at 8 p.m., and you can watch the game on FOX.
In other Braves news, the team recently released plans for their upcoming Post-game Concert Series. The first scheduled event in the series will take place on Sunday, July 20 following a 1:30 p.m. showdown with the Washington Nationals and will feature Grammy Award-winning gospel singer Fred Hammond. Next up, Christian rock star Steven Curtis Chapman will perform on Saturday, Aug. 2, following a 3:55 p.m. contest with the Milwaukee Brewers. Log on to Atlantabraves.com to purchase tickets now.
INSTANT CLASSIC
In case you were especially busy last Sunday, Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal defeated Switzerland’s Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 in the Finals of Wimbledon. The four-hour, 48-minute marathon will be remembered as one of, if not the greatest, tennis matches of all-time and was the longest men’s singles final ever played at the All England Club, going back to 1877. Federer’s loss was his first in 66 attempts on grass courts and his only loss over the last six Wimbledon Championships. With the win, Nadal became the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win both Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year. Nadal, only 22, has moved very close to overtaking Federer as the World’s No. 1-ranked player, a spot the Swiss legend has maintained for a record 232 consecutive weeks.
