Former Milton athletics director Craig Bennett announced today that he was leaving the school to become football head coach at the new Cambridge High School, according to Milton head coach Howie D’Cristofaro.
“He told the team this morning at 8 a.m.,” said D’Cristofaro of Bennett. “He said it was a dream of his to be a head coach. It’s a great opportunity for him.”
With one of his former assistants now at a school in the same neck of the woods, D’Cristofaro will eventually have to face Bennett on the field although the two schools are now in different classes (Milton –AAAAAA, Cambridge – AAAAA).
“It’ll be a few years before it becomes a rivalry,” said D’Cristofaro. “We have a great relationship with each other, and we’ll do everything we can to help he and his program.”
The Eagles will replace Bennett with Gary Silvestri at the AD position.
Bennett was at Milton for five seasons and has 15 years of coaching experience, including nine as a coordinator. He was linebackers coach last season.
D’Cristofaro is going into his second season with the Eagles, who were 4-7 last year in his first season.
Calls to Bennett were not returned.
