COACHSPEAK: Irwin says Lassiter QB ready for Elite 11

This afternoon some of the nation’s top quarterbacks will be rotating through drills and throwing routes to wide receivers at Buford High School. The Elite 11 Regionals will feature many top-level rising senior quarterbacks and select elite underclassman competing for a shot at the Elite 11 Camp in Southern California this July.

One quarterback that will take part is Lassiter’s Eddie Printz. ESPN’s No. 19 QB-pocket passer prospect attended last year’s Elite 11 regional in Athens, and Lassiter head coach Jep Irwin says that this will be the fourth year in a row for Printz at the Elite 11 camps. “It is a really unique experience for him.”

Irwin also noted that Printz, who threw for 3350 yards and 28 touchdowns one year ago as the Trojans advanced to the Class AAAAA semifinals, has been working hard throughout the winter to improve. “He’s really taken a leadership role. He is leading workouts and throwing to the younger guys.”

The Elite 11 Regional camp will take place this afternoon at Buford High School from 4-6 pm. The quarterbacks will receive one-on-one instruction before the accuracy competition. A Nike Football Training Camp will take place tomorrow at Buford from 9 am – 2 pm. The NFTC is for all positions as participants are taught position-specific and athletic performance drills.

The Brookwood Broncos boys tennis team will host the Region 7-AAAAA No. 4 seed some time next week as the GHSA state playoffs get underway. Broncos coach Heath Hinton spoke with Score recently about his team. While Mark Guentert at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Matt Jones and David Brown get many of the headlines, the Broncos likely wouldn’t be undefeated without the efforts of everyone including Brookwood’s No. 3 singles player. “The improvement of No. 3 singles player Drew Wendel may be the most impressive thing I have noticed from last year.”

As Dunwoody wrapped up its efforts in the Region 6-AAAA track and field championships, you may have recognized one of the assistant coaches. Three-time state champion Antonio McKay, who holds a pair of Olympic gold medals, serves as an assistant to Brad Hendrickson. “It is very humbling to work alongside an Olympian like Antonio McKay,” said Hendrickson. “He brings so much knowledge and experience to the program.”
