The soccer team earned its first Atlantic Sun Conference victory of the season on Friday night with a 4-0 triumph over Jacksonville University (5-6-1, 1-2). The Lady Owls scored two goals in each half and were led by senior Rachael Baer, who notched two goals in the game.

Brittany Vining contributed two assists as well as a goal of her own. On Sunday, the team won another home conference game with a 5-1 defeat of North Florida. Katie Scott scored the first goal of the match for KSU, which was also her first of the season. Baer scored three goals to tally the first hat trick for women’s soccer this season. The team (7-3-3, 2-1-1) travels out of town this weekend to Nashville, Tenn., for conference matches against Belmont and Lipscomb.

TENNIS NOTES

The men’s tennis squad competed at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational this past weekend and made a name for themselves in the annals of KSU tennis history. On Sunday, the doubles team of Justin Suessermann and Lawrence Washington defeated Vanderbilt’s Scott Liebermann and Andy Pulido to become the first Owl players to win a match against an SEC opponent. In the following match, however, the duo was defeated by a doubles team from UNC-Wilmington. It was KSU’s most competitive draw of the season, as the team faced players from powerhouse programs like Auburn and Georgia. The tennis team returns to action on Oct. 16-19 at the ITA Men’s Regional, hosted by the University of Kentucky.

Ayano Tanaka of the women’s tennis team reached the finals of the Queen City Invitational on Sunday. The sophomore took the match to three sets before losing to Xavier’s Kelsey Kinnard. The tournament, which was held in Cincinnati, also saw KSU’s Morgan Carney and Vera Shkundina win consolation matches on the final day. Both matches were conceded, as the Lady Owls’ opponents did not play due to injury. The team will return to the courts on Oct. 24-27 in Athens for the ITA Regional Championships.

ON THE RUN

The women’s cross country team finished 14th at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday. The team was paced by Mackenzie Howe, who came in 28th place overall. The team will travel to Orlando, Fla., to take part in the Walt Disney Classic this Saturday.

The men’s cross country team placed 12th at the Tiger Invitational. Scott Burley turned in the best time for KSU, finishing 33rd overall. The meet was considered the toughest field the Owls have competed in thus far in 2008 and the 12th-place finish was a solid outing for the squad. The Owls will also take part in the Walt Disney Classic on Saturday.
