Wesleyan advanced to its third Elite Eight in school history and first since 2008 after sweeping Bremen 9-1, 4-0. In game one, a six-run fourth helped fuel the victory. Game two was a little different as the Wesleyan offense never approached double digits, but the pitching remained dominant for the Wolves.Amanda DeLaPerrierre got the start for Wesleyan and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning; she finished the game with four-hit shutout and five strikeouts.
After losing game one 3-1 to Lowndes, Kennesaw Mountain needed some late-inning magic in game two to salvage its season. Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Malea Bell hit a two-run homer to spark the Mustangs rally. Kathryn Woody then provided the game-tying hit with a single to score Chandler Stooksbury to tie the game at five. Then in the bottom of the ninth, the Mustangs found themselves in yet another hole after Lowndes hit a go ahead RBI triple in the top half of the inning. Ally Box scored the tying run off of a throwing error, and then Molly Uhrman smashed a pitch over the left field wall to hit a walk-off three run homer.Game three will be played Thursday with a trip to Columbus on the line.
Ola upset the top-seeded team from Region 2-AAAA in a 4-3, 3-1 sweep over South Effingham. The Mustangs will be joined in Columbus by region foe Whitewater who also pulled off a second round upsetting sweep. The Wildcats won 4-3 and 3-2 over Region 1-AAAA No. 1 Houston County.
COMEBACK KID …
During the Mount Pisgah Christian School’s 5-4, first round clinching victory over North Cobb Christian in the first round of the state playoffs, Courtney Condon hit a home run and pitched seven strong innings. This performance was made even more special because nine months ago, doubts arose that the reigning All-Region 5-A player would ever walk again.
Last December, Condon was diagnosed with blood clots in both of her legs that required three surgeries over 19 days at Eggleston Children’s Hospital. Despite the surgeries, the clots still remained so Condon traveled to Arizona for 15 days to endure three additional surgeries. This time the blood clots went away. Because of the extended time off of her legs, Condon practically had to relearn how to walk through hours of physical therapy.
Now after a full recovery, Condon has help lead the Patriots to the second round of the playoffs behind an 11-2 record and 2.76 ERA in the circle while holding opponents to just a .196 batting average. Condon has been a force at the plate as well with a .424 batting average, three homers and 26 RBIs.
UPSETS GALORE …
Lovett pulled off a 6-0, 0-1, 8-4 upset series victory over the top seed from Region 5, Heard County, in the first round of the state playoffs.
“We knew with Heard County being a one seed that they were going to be tough opponent,” remarked head coach Mark Bagwell. “It is a tough place to play … I think everybody was there at that series to watch them play, so [Heard County] had a lot of support.”
Jordan Wolfe pitched all three games for the Lions. She also helped herself out at the plate, producing a big two-run hit in the first game of the series.
