LOSING STREAK ENDS: Dawgs dominate Chanticleers 59-0 for first win

Well that wasn’t so hard.

Georgia (1-2) romped to its first win of the season with a 59-0 win over outmatched Coastal Carolina Saturday in the first non-sellout since 2000 at Sanford Stadium. The Dawgs led 35-0 at the half and 59-0 after three before emptying the bench in the final stanza.

“It was good to get a W,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt. “A lot of good things happened today because a lot of good things have been happening along, but today we got it in the win column. I think we have a very good team. Today, they did about as well as we can ask them to do.”

Ticket sales fell exactly 800 short of continuing the sellout streak, as 91,946 were sold.

For the Chanticleers, playing an SEC team like Georgia is a learning experience.

“Georgia is the team we thought they were,” said Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett. “After watching the film and studying, we had the ultimate respect for them. We had a lot of mistakes against a really good team. They are a mighty good team and we think the world of Coach Richt and wish the team the best of .”

Georgia totaled 462 yards of offense, including 275 through the air. Aaron Murray was 18-of-26 for 188 yards and three scores in just two quarters of action. Backup Hutson Mason had some success as well, in completing 6-of-9 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Even Brandon Boykin got in to the act, completing a 19-yard pass.

“All down the line, people were making plays — whether it be first team guys, second team guys or third team guys,” said Murray. “Guys went out and competed hard.”

Four Bulldogs ran for touchdowns including Mason and Murray. Running backs Isaiah Crowell and Carlton Thomas combined for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

Tavarres King led Georgia with 65 yards receiving and two touchdowns while freshman Malcolm Mitchell caught four balls for 43 yards and two scores of his own.

Crowell opened the scoring with a 27-yard run, then Murray snuck in from the one before connecting with King on a 32-yard touchdown pass to stake the Dawgs the 21-0 lead after one.

Kicker Blair Walsh set a personal record with a 56-yard field goal to give the Dawgs a 38-0 in the third quarter. Walsh also set the school record for most PATS in a career with 152.

Next week, the Dawgs travel to Oxford to take on struggling Ole Miss. Houston Nutt’s squad was shellacked today by Vanderbilt 30-7. Georgia has not lost to Ole Miss since 1996 and will carry an eight-game series winning streak into the game.
