As I made my way to the old Northcutt Stadium of Marietta with some friends and family, we were all excited and pumped for the first home game for the Blue Devils, with nothing on our minds but defeating the Cherokee Warriors. With all of the excitement and talk about the game, my adrenaline was pumping as the Blue Devils kicked off to the Cherokee Warriors on a beautiful Friday evening. As the marching band played in time to the kicker’s footsteps and the fans’ roars, I knew it was going to be a good game. When Cherokee put points on the board early with a field goal, it did not startle the Blue Devils one bit.
In the second quarter, Marietta’s Chris Tanzy threw to Caleb Cox for a touchdown, making it 7-3 and boosting everyone’s excitement to a new level. Everyone in the stands was screaming the quarterback’s name. “TANZY! TANZY! TANZY!” It made my heart pound with excitement
As the two teams go to their locker rooms it was the marching band’s turn to put on a show. I was especially looking forward to see the halftime show because I had many friends involved with the marching band. Everyone at halftime was bobbing their head to the marching band’s music and watching the amazing baton twirler not only throw two batons but adding fire to them. It was very intense.
At the beginning of the third quarter as everyone was getting back from buying their snacks and drinks, the Blue Devils were receiving the ball. Near the end of the third quarter a player who is a friend to everyone gets tackled awkwardly and goes down. As the crowd stays silent to see how bad of an injury it really was, they breathe a sigh of relief when he gets up and walks to the bench. Fortunately, he wasn’t badly injured and soon went back into the game with everyone cheering him on as he jogged back onto the field. The crowd support must have given him a lift. He was playing a great game, and soon rushed 3 yards for the Blue Devils’ second touchdown. But Cherokee was not giving up and quickly drove down the field trying to get more points on the board.
It was finally the fourth quarter, and neither team was ready to give in. As each squad continued to fight for a win, Cherokee’s key running back Matt Blaylock rushed for Cherokee’s first touchdown making it 14-9 Marietta. Cherokee went for the two-point conversion but was unsuccessful. The Blue Devils received the ball and held it until time ran out.
Everyone was excited to see the Blue Devils not only win their first home game, but also to see that they were still undefeated with wins over Northview and Cherokee. The band continued playing their music with pride, giving the fans a boost of energy while leaving Northcutt Stadium.
