After bowing out to Clarke Central in the first round of the playoffs two years in a row, the Raiders look to create something memorable this year by returning for a third straight season. Returning for the Raiders is fourth-year head coach Dominic Callaway who has generated a 22-10 record while at the helm at Mays.
“We have guys who have stepped up every week, and we are very fortunate to have the best participating guys,” stated Callaway. “This is only going to make us better.”
And when Callaway states that he has a great group of players he truly does. In particular, the two main positions that bring back the most continuity and experience are the offensive line and wideout positions.
“The offensive line has four gentlemen who were sophomores last season who played, but receiver is obviously our most experienced spot,” said Callaway.
One receiver in particular stands out at Mays, Jonathan Williams; last season he averaged 20 yards per catch. Williams currently has received scholarship offers from Wake Forest and Vanderbilt as well as sparked interest from Auburn, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.
One of the players on the offensive line, Bruce Burkes, currently has an offer pending from VMI. Burkes led the team in tackles last season. The line also includes Marquez Pitts and Elijah Burns who are expected to help hold down the reigns.
In Callaway’s multiple offense, running back Torey Brown truly has sparkled. Last year he rushed for 1,100 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. Because of his exemplary season, he has landed interest from Ball state.
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive back J.T. Blasingames has stymied opponent’s passing attacks for the past couple of years. He currently has offers from Rice, Air Force and VMI and has received interest from Michigan.
The Raiders kickoff their season against Dunwoody on Aug. 26.
