For the first time in his career, Tiger Woods did not make the cut at a PGA Championship. The four-time champion shot a seven-over par today to finish at 10 over for the tournament.
“Well, I think it’s a step back in the sense that I didn’t make the cut and I’m not contending in the tournament,” said Woods. “But it’s a giant leap forward in the fact that I played two straight weeks, healthy.”
He wasn’t alone. Among former PGA champions, only Davis Love III finished below par while 12 other former champs finished over par. Last year’s winner, Martin Kaymer, missed the cut by one stroke.
Tied for the lead after two rounds are Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley, who each finished at five-under. Bradley shot the best round of the day with a 64, just one stroke behind the tournament-best 63 that was tied by Steve Stricker Thursday.
Dufner said his experience playing golf in the South helped his cause this weekend.
“I wouldn’t say that I expected to be five under after two days, but you know, I felt like I could have a good chance if I played fairly well,” said the former Auburn golfer. “So I was pretty comfortable on this style of golf course.”
Rory McIlroy continued to press on despite straining a tendon in his right wrist Thursday. An MRI last night revealed no tears, and McIlroy shot a 73 today to make the cut at three-over par.
“If I don’t think I could contend, I probably wouldn’t be playing,” he said.
Stricker, yesterday’s leader, tumbled to seventh after a rough day on the course in which he shot a 74. Jerry Kelly, second place coming into Friday, shot a 73 and fell to 11th.
Bubba Watson continued his roller coaster performance by rocketing up 54 places in the standings today – the biggest jump of any player in the tourney – to make the cut at two over. Yesterday, Watson had the most consecutive birdies and most consecutive bogeys of any player. Today, he shot a 68.
