Eagles capitalize on opponent’s special-teams mistake, squeak out a victory

The football team showed signs of improvement in a narrow 14-13 win over Region 6A-AAAA opponent Chamblee. A missed extra point helped the War Eagles notch a 14-13 victory on the road at North DeKalb Stadium. The Bulldogs had Marist on the ropes late in the first half after a Matt Connors fumble turned into a 67-yard touchdown return with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Chamblee dominated the rest of the half, but couldn’t put any points on the board. Connors redeemed himself with a 1-yard run to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Patrick Sullivan’s 14-yard touchdown scamper gave Marist it’s first lead of the night with 3:13 to play. Chamblee responded with an 80-yard touchdown run from Warren Norman. But Joshua Benton missed the extra point wide left, giving Marist the win, its 14th straight over Chamblee. … The softball team handled Miller Grove 15-0 last week. They have won their last four games by a combined score of 42-0. … Girls cross country took home first place at the Marist Double Dip. Sophie Harkins paced the team with a 20:36 third-place finish. The boys team finished second.
