PREPS: GPB broadcasting GHSA wrestling championships

Continuing its strong tradition of broadcasting high school sports championship events, Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB Media) will televise the GHSA Traditional Wrestling Championship live from 4 -7 PM on Saturday, February 19 from Gwinnett Center.

The wrestling telecast is a joint production of GPB Sports and PlayON! Sports, an Atlanta-based digital media and technology company. The telecast and streaming of all five individual mats will be available on line at GPB.org/sports and on GHSA.tv. The event is in association with title sponsor Team Georgia and the GHSA Digital Sports Network

The matches will include 14 weight classes at the state’s five different classifications and veteran wrestling announcer Joe Miller will handle the play-by-play duties.

“This is another big step for us,’’ said I.J. Rosenberg, GPB’s Director of Sports. “We have been doing the football and basketball championships for years and are ready to start expanding into the other sports. Because of the large number of wrestlers from different high schools, this event touches every corner of the state and GPB’s network covers every corner of the state.”

“Team Georgia” is the common name for the Georgia Amateur Wrestling Association, whose vision is to enable Georgia to be a “Top-Tier” wrestling state by expanding participation, and promoting excellence in Georgia wrestling.

“Having all the matches webcast and the finals matches live on television gives everyone the opportunity to watch their kids, nephews, and grandchildren compete even if they are unable to travel to Atlanta,” said Anthony Flatt, the USA Wrestling Georgia State Chairman.

Tournament director Bud Hennebaul sees a great benefit. “By sponsoring the championships on GPB, we reach 98 percent of the households in Georgia. It’s a great way to get the word out. Now we can reach out to kids in rural Georgia and get them excited about this versatile sport.’’

GPB will host the Championship Basketball Finals beginning on Friday, March 11.
