We’re a third of the way home in the 2010-2011 Regions Directors Cup race. The Georgia Athletics Directors Association has presented the award since 1999-2000 to recognize the very best athletics programs in Georgia. Thus far in the school year, some of the traditional powers are in control of their respective classifications while some upstarts are also making an appearance at the top of the standings.
In Class 5A, perennial powers Collins Hill and Walton (who have combined to win the last five cups) are in second and third place, respectively. But 2003-2004 champion Brookwood is in first due to their state titles in football and boys cross country. Brookwood leads on the boys side thus far while Harrison is leading the girls standings. Collins Hill’s state title in softball and Walton’s volleyball and cross country state championships have kept them close to the Broncos.
Meanwhile, in Class 4A, Marist leads across the board as has been the norm since the beginning of the Directors Cup. The War Eagles have won every cup since the creation of Class 5A brought them to their current classification. However, Pope is in second overall and on the girls side due to their state title in volleyball, while Chattahoochee is the runner up thus far in the boys side after their football championship.
Similarly, in Class 3A, St. Pius X is in the lead. The Golden Lions have won the past two cups for their classification. Allatoona, a new school located in Cobb, is in second place overall. The Buccaneers are leading the girls side while the Woodward Academy boys are in second in the boys bracket behind Pius.
A real fight is brewing in Class 2A. Perhaps the most competitive classification traditionally in the Directors Cup race, six schools have won the overall cup. This year, Lovett is leading overall while defending champion Westminster is in second, despite sweeping the cross country state titles. Fellow Fulton County private school Blessed Trinity received a huge boost from their volleyball crown leads on the girls side. Lovett leads the boys race.
In the state’s smallest classification, two-time defending champion Wesleyan is leading the pack. But Savannah Christian is right on their heels after their runner-up finish in football. The Wolves lead the boys bracket while the Raiders lead in the girls standings.
