Astros shut out by Mays, face Washington Friday

The football team fell to 0-2 after being shut out by Mays (2-0) 28-0 on Saturday night. The team only gained 177 yards of total offense while giving up 99 rushing yards and three touchdowns to the Raiders’ Desmond Walker. Mays’ D’Mario Turner also returned a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown to seal the game at Lakewood Stadium. The Astros face the Washington Bulldogs (1-1) on Friday night at Lakewood. The Bulldogs feature star defensive back Branden Smith, who is one of the most highly recruited seniors in the state. The senior has already received scholarship offers from most southern powers, including UGA, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Florida State. The Bulldogs are coming off a dramatic 22-21 win over Cedar Grove. … The softball team will take on Carver on Wednesday and Union Grove on Thursday. The matchup against Union Grove will be a critical one as the Wolverines are one of the better teams in Region 2-AAAAA. … The cross country teams will compete in The Mill Run at Chapel Hill on Sept. 27
